What rescues do you work with?

The animal rescues we work with on a regular basis are the Moncton SPCA, Sasha’s Cat Rescue, Riley’s Legacy Cat Rescue, Abandoned Cat Rescue, Cat Rescue Maritimes (Ca-R-Ma Moncton) and Fulfilling Hearts Rescue.

What is the Greater Moncton SPCA?

The Greater Moncton SPCA is the largest animal shelter east of Montreal, handling nearly 7000 animals per year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, Guinea pigs, rats, and many other exotic pets. All of the animals they adopt out are already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped, as well as their nails trimmed and ears cleaned. Dogs are given a rabies vaccine and cats are treated for fleas. Potential adopters must fill out an application, which can be found on their website, along with other adoption information. They have a volunteer program for members of the community to walk and play with the shelter animals and also offer free educational tours of the shelter. The SPCA relies solely on donations and fundraising events to cover operating costs, as well as donated items such as cleaning supplies, pet food and cat litter. Upcoming fundraisers and a donation page can be found on their website, or you can visit them in person at 116 Greenock St. in Moncton.

Tell me about Sasha’s Cat Rescue.

Sasha’s Cat Rescue is a non-profit cat rescue run by members of the Moncton community who are concerned about cats that are abandoned, neglected or unwanted in the area. They are committed to bringing every cat in their care to the veterinary clinic and making sure they receive any medical treatments they need, no matter what injuries or illnesses fall into their laps. They do not believe in euthanasia, due to the high cost of treatment. Every cat they adopt out is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, checked for feline leukemia, and treated for fleas and worms. An approved application is required for adoption, as well as a minimum donation of $75 per cat. Sasha’s Rescue receives all of their money through donations and fundraising, including regular online auctions of donated items from the community on their Facebook page, which also has a complete photo album of all adoptable cats currently available. Financial donations can be made through email transfer (sashasrescue@gmail.com), directly to the founder of the rescue, Annick, or directly to our clinic in person or by phone.

What is Riley’s Legacy Cat Rescue?

Riley’s Legacy is another local non-profit cat rescue organization. They are a group of volunteers committed to helping homeless cats in need of medical attention and a forever home. They are not an open door shelter and only take in cats on a case-by-case basis with a maximum number of cats they can afford to care for and a limited amount of foster homes available. They only take in stray cats and won’t take owner surrendered cats under any circumstances. All of their cats are examined by a veterinarian, spayed/neutered, tested for feline leukemia, treated for fleas and worms, vaccinated, and treated for all other required medical needs. Riley’s Legacy is also a no-kill group. Like the other rescues, they require an adoption application and request a minimum donation of $75 to adopt a cat. They also operate solely on donation and fundraising. Donations can be made at our clinic, by phone or in person, or email transfers can be sent to rileyslegacy2014@gmail.com. Their Facebook page has more information, the option to request an adoption application, and a full photo album of cats for adoption.

What is Abandoned Cat Rescue?

Abandoned Cat Rescue is yet another volunteer-run non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, fostering, spaying/neutering, and adopting out cats and kittens. They rescue stray and abandoned cats and find them homes, and also control population growth in feral cat colonies, through their Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. This means they spay/neuter the feral cats that are too wild to be put into homes and return them to their original colonies, where they are fed and monitored by dedicated caregivers. They strive to provide education and support to the community and have also adopted a no-euthanasia policy for their rescue, unless too ill or injured to recover. All adoptable cats are placed in foster homes and are examined, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas/worms and tested for feline leukemia. A minimum donation of $90 is required to adopt one of their cats. They hold many fundraising events throughout the year, including online and live auctions, yard sales and barbecues, and also take part in the global event called “Remember Me Thursday” annually, which is a candle-lighting ceremony that honors the millions of pets who have lost their lives, without the benefit of a loving home and to shine a light on the millions of healthy pets still awaiting adoption. Donations can be made on their website and also at one of their donation jars around Greater Moncton, including in our clinic’s reception area!

What is Cat Rescue Maritimes? (Ca-R-Ma Moncton)

Cat Rescue Maritimes (Ca-R-Ma) is a volunteer-run cat rescue with chapters all over New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. They are working to reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens in the community with their Trap-Neuter-Return program and to place non-feral homeless cats and kittens in responsible homes. They also provide colonies of feral, stray and abandoned cats with food, shelter, and minor medical care. Long term, they hope to educate the public on the importance of spaying/neuter and working with other rescues to bring out legislation for the benefit of all animals. They raise funds by selling items, like their Ca-R-Ma calendars, t-shirts, and tickets on donated products. They also accept donations of both money and food. Financial donations can be made online or directly to our clinic (in person or by phone). They have tons of good information on their website, including how to volunteer and how to build your own feral cat shelter.
