The snow is melting and the heat is rising! You know what that means – green grass, trips to the beach and… hot dogs?
It is true, dogs are susceptible to overheating and heat stroke just like us, only sometimes they need some help. This can not only happen by being left in cars for too long, but also by being overactive in the heat and during very humid weather.
Some signs include frantic panting, vomiting and diarrhea, increased temperature, altered behaviour (not acting themselves), collapse and even seizures. Some of the most at risk dogs are Pugs, Shih Tzus, Boston Terriers, etc. Basically, any breed with a smushed-in nose. Some of the others at risk are very high energy dogs that don’t know when to quit. If you notice any of the signs listed above please call your vet for advice, or in the case of collapse or seizure, bring them to your vet ASAP and call on the way to alert Veterinary staff of your arrival.
Don’t worry though! Here are some great tips to ensure your furry friend stays safe this summer.
- Buy a kiddie pool – this will allow them to lay down and cool themselves, always ensure there is water available, limit play time and long walks to dusk and dawn when the sun isn’t at its hottest.
- Don’t leave your pet in the car – even if you are going for a quick trip into town, leave them at home, they will be better off in the cool house.
Most of all, have fun and stay safe!
